Birth can be an intense, emotional rollercoaster of joy, pain and anticipation. When you’ve chosen to have a professional photographer there to document it, the last thing you should worry about is whether or not they are experienced enough to remain calm throughout one of the most intimate times of your life.
I’ve been attending births as a photographer, and a lay doula, for over five years. I have extensive experience in both hospital and home settings as well as a strong relationship with the midwife and doula community here in Victoria.
What is your experience with birth and photography?
More than just a passing interest, supporting expectant and birthing mothers has always been a passion of mine. I am the Victoria area ICAN co-leader, a breastfeeding counselor and a mother of three beautiful children all born in very different ways (a birth center, emergency cesarean and a home VBAC!).
I have been a photographer for over 12 years, serving clients locally and internationally. I am a member in good standing with professional organizations and the recipient of several major international awards. My photos have been published online, in newspapers and magazines and I’ve had the honour of being a featured photographer of the prestigious Asukabooks album company.
I have extensive experience photographing newborns, expectant mothers, families, weddings (and of course, births).
I love birth: I love the first breath, the tears of joy, the first cry and that moment when you fall hopelessly in love with a brand new life. “Dawning” birth sessions are a combination of my two greatest passions, birth and photography, and that passion is what has led me to bring my birth coverage out of special request, and into packages now available to all clients.
What is your style of photography?
I take a photojournalistic approach to all of my photography sessions. This style is often called “lifestyle photography”; it’s all about about capturing the story as it unfolds with as little interference as possible. There is a strong preference for natural light, but I am well versed in many varieties of off-camera lighting and am prepared for every lighting condition.
I have special requests for my birth… is that okay?
Once we confirm your booking, we’ll set up a free consultation in your home or at a comfortable location. There we’ll discuss your photography needs, including any special requests and preferences.
Sensitivity and discretion are my first priorities in Dawning birth sessions, which is also why it’s important to be able to meet each other before the big day and learn more about your birth plan.
What equipment will you bring with you?
I will be bringing my camera body, several lenses, a whack of memory cards and some extra light just in case.
Upon arrival I may set up a small, off-camera light in one area of the room. This light is triggered wirelessly (no cords to trip over, and no large stands to get in the way) and usually set to point at a wall. This will help to ensure I have good light even when you’re moving around.
If you are planning a home birth, it’s strongly suggested that your consultation take place in your home so I will be able to see where you will be giving birth and demonstrate how discreet a lighting set-up can be.
